A Tourist’s Guide To London’s Strangest Restaurants

London is quite possibly the foodie capital of the world, with a whole host of Michelin-starred restaurants and more variety than you will find anywhere else. If you’re planning on visiting London any time soon, and you fancy a dining experience that is more than a little out of the ordinary, you might want to make a reservation at one of these weird eateries:

Dans Le Noir

Bored with those pesky printed menus? Tired of eating food that you can actually see? Then you might want to head along to Dans Le Noir, a restaurant where you are served by blind waiters in total darkness. This type of sensory deprivation can heighten the other senses, making for an eating experience that is out of this world.

Tiroler Hut

If you hanker for some authentic Austrian food then this bizarre restaurant in Notting Hill is very much the place to go. Every evening, the Austrian owner gives a quite frankly baffling musical performance involving lots of cowbells, an accordion, and some folk songs sung in German. It all makes for a truly memorable experience, and the food is absolutely delicious to boot.

Sarastro

This theatre-themed restaurant oozes kitsch appeal. Here, you can enjoy a delicious meal while pretending to watch a show in this ludicrously over-decorated restaurant, which looks like the backstage area at a fantastically well-appointed old theatre.

Café In The Crypt

Ever wanted to have your dinner in the crypt of an old cathedral? No? Then you’ll want to steer clear of Café In The Crypt. However, if you aren’t put off by the idea of eating around dead bodies, then this is a great place to go for a spot of lunch, with a surprisingly warm and welcoming atmosphere.

Rootmaster

If you enjoy vegan food and bad puns, then you will absolutely love Rootmaster, a vegan café set inside an old Routemaster bus, of the type seen in the Cliff Richard movie Summer Holiday. The food is excellent and the setting is delightfully quirky and historic, so if you are around the Brick Lane area, you should definitely check this place out.

Archipelago

Fed up of eating meat from your usual farmyard animals? Then Archipelago could well be the restaurant for you. They specialise in serving unusual meats, such as crocodile and kangaroo steaks, and while their menu may put off those of a delicate disposition, it is well worth a visit for those of a more adventurous persuasion.
